Towards an Integrated Approach to Studying the Stratified Ceramics from Dandanakan/Daş Rabat, Turkmenistan (9th–12th Centuries <scp>a.d.</scp> )

This study draws on archaeological, stylistic, and technological evidence to explore ceramic brick production of the medieval Islamic period in southern Karakum region Turkmenistan, home many urban sites along so-called Silk Roads. We focus a 9th–12th centuries a.d. assemblage recovered from site Dandanakan/Daş Rabat during first season ToKa (Town project) 2019. Special emphasis is paid characterizing local fabrics technologies through macroscopic examination petrography, SEM-EDS, FTIR analyses. Our results show that unglazed glazed earthenware were manufactured using two or regional clay outcrops, also employed kilns detected outside Dandanakan’s city walls. A different was used for slip earthenware. These all had high lead-silica glazes, except turquoise glazes both earthen- siliceous wares.
